TECH TIP #103 – IMPROVE THE SYSTEM GROUND
Here’s an easy improvement you can make to your car’s electrical system! Just move the battery ground cable so it goes directly from the battery to a starter mounting bolt. If you ground the battery to the body, the motor or the frame, the ground has to travel extra distance to the starter. As your vehicle ages, dirt, grease, and, ultimately, resistance build up along this path. And if you run into high resistance in this starting circuit, you might end up with a slow cranking motor or one that won’t start at all when it’s hot, since heat will expand internal motor parts, making it harder to crank over.
